Almont is well known for the meeting of the East and Taylor River to form the raging Gunnison River. Because of the mesmerizing rivers and open space, this small town offers an abundance of outdoor activities.
Primarily a summer community, Tin Cup is the perfect place to get away from it all. An historic district, Tin Cup’s first non-Indian visitors were prospectors traveling from the California goldfields in the 1850’s. They fist found gold in Tin Cup in 1859 but the first big strike wasn’t until 1879. Tin Cup got its name from a prospector who carried out his gold dust in a tin cup. Tin Cup was a large mining camp known from having many saloons & brothel. Tin Cup is accessed from Cottonwood Pass, Taylor Canyon, or Cumberland Pass, all beautiful drives.
Home of the largest body of water in Colorado, Blue Mesa Reservoir boasts amazing fishing and great waterskiing with more to explore than one could ever dream. Surrounded by rivers, mountains, forests, and lakes, Gunnison is a fantastic central location for all that is extraordinary in the area. At a population of over 5,000, Gunnison is also the largest populated area in Gunnison County. Elevation at 7,703. Gunnison was founded by Sylvester Richardson in 1874 who realized the 70 day growing season did not work for farming and the community turned to ranching instead. Today, Western State College and the recreation industry are major employers in Gunnison.
With views in every direction, Irwin has access to a life many dream of. Unique with seasonal access, many enjoy their summer cabin in the mountains. For the adventurous, homeowners snowmobile to their properties in order to enjoy the quiet peaceful life Irwin has to offer year round.
Lake City Area
Located in the San Juan Mountains about 55 miles south of Gunnison,
Lake City is great for the adventurous with their countless acres of national forest. Stargazing and wildlife observing are like no other; with little light or noise pollution this peaceful city has a slower pace of life.
The hunter & fishers paradise! If you prefer to view the wildlife look for…elk, deer, birds of prey, trout, coyote, pronghorn, bighorn. Powderhorn is mostly vast ranches with winding rivers, blue skies, & the quiet calm of nature. Located about 22 miles north of Lake City & about 33 miles south of Gunnison, Powderhorn is away from it all.
Elevation 9,242, Pitkin is 26 miles North East of Gunnison. Founded by Frank Curtiss, George Chiles, & Wayne Scotte in 1979, Pitkin was Colorado’s first mining camp west of the Continental Divide. The town of Pitkin sold 59 lots totaling $149.65. Each lot ranged between $1 to $5. A gorgeous summer destination, Pitkin is a small friendly town.
