Only a 30 minute drive from the Gunnison/Crested Butte Airport, Crested Butte is at the north of the Gunnison Valley nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Transportation from the airport can be arranged either through Alpine Express or Hertz rental car. The flight from Denver is approximately 45-60 minutes (depending on the tail wind and appointed route). Driving from Denver International Airport takes approximately 4 hours driving. Prior to departing, please be sure to call (877) 315-7623 for current road conditions.
Directions from Denver
70W to 470 S found on the west side of Denver
Take 470S to 285W (this road will go south west)
285 will dead end on 24 which will take either N to Cottonwood Pass or S to Monarch Pass
South to Monarch Pass
(better cell phone service, easier drive, a little longer if going straight to CB)
24S will connect w/ Hwy 50 which you will take W over Monarch Pass
50 takes you to Gunnison
to get to Crested Butte take a right on main or 135N
North on 24 to Cottonwood Pass
(only open in the summer, dirt road, very tight curves, takes time off the drive if going directly to Crested Butte)
This road will take you to Buena Vista
In downtown Buena Vista turn left at the light. There should be a sign for Cottonwood pass
This road will take you over the mountain and dead end at Taylor reservoir where you will turn left
Drive this to Almont
Turn right to Crested Butte or Left to Gunnison
Construction on both sides of Cottonwood Pass is occurring in 2018. The road will be closed starting June 18 from the Avalanche Trailhead parking lot (Chaffee County side) to the intersection of CR 209 and CR 742 (Gunnison County side). There will be no public access to the Collegiate Peak Campgrounds, Denny Creek Parking Lot, Holy Water Parking Lot, the Summit, Continental Divide Trail, Timberline Trail, or areas in the vicinity. Please refer to the Year 2018 <> closure map for more information. Emergency vehicle access will be allowed at all times, as weather permits.
